Older House Wiring

back to menu

Houses built between 1900 and 1960 were not designed with today’s multiple appliance and lighting loads, and contain either VIR (Vulcan indianised rubber) or TRS (tough rubber sheath) wiring, and porcelain re-wirable fuses. This wiring system has been found to perish, become brittle, and decay, which leads to hazards such as electric shock, overloading, short circuiting and fires.

Any homes still containing this wiring should be rewired with TPS (tough plastic sheathing) as soon as possible and have their fuses replaced with circuit breakers and residual current devices, which are now required by law in all new homes built in New Zealand today.

Most homes can be completely rewired within a few days, with minimum disruption to the occupier. We offer a free inspection and estimate if you suspect your home may require partial or full rewiring.
